Just Released! Journey Into Your Rainforest Mind: A Field Guide for Gifted Adults and Teens…

It is finally here! The book you have been waiting for! The best of my blog (2014-2018) all organized into a sweet little field guide that you can carry with you in times of stress, despair, and boredom. A book with more ideas to help you dive into your depths and find the jewels. A book that is entertaining and light-hearted enough that even your most reluctant teenager might take a look. A book that will help your therapists, teachers, doctors, and your insufferable Aunt Charlotte understand you.

While my first book is full of in-depth case studies and details that you may be reading more than once, over time, because it is a lot to take in at once, this one is full of explanations, reminders, humor, and suggestions that are easy to ingest and grok and do. Your favorite blog posts will appear like old friends ready to give you big hugs and kisses.

Of course, if you don’t yet have my first book, you will need to get that one, too, while you’re at it. And, you might even want to write a review. (Don’t worry, it doesn’t need to be long or perfect or brilliant. But it can be.)

And speaking of reviews, here is one from the super rainforest-y Dr. Melanie Hayes, the founder and director of the Big Minds Unschool in California. (a great resource for families with twice-exceptional kids)

“For those of you who have had the pleasure (and profound reassurance) of reading Your Rainforest Mind: A Guide to the Well-Being of Gifted Adults and Youth, this companion book deepens your sojourn into your mental wilderness. Paula Prober’s wisdom and experience is evident on every page. You will find no better guide to help you examine all of the complex nuances of having a mind that is teeming with inexplicable life! Each chapter looks at ways in which gifted persons are uniquely sensitive, creative, and expressive; and gives them multiple signposts and pathways to find appropriate support. Reading this book will leave you feeling validated, accommodated, and celebrated; ready to fully explore what is waiting for you in your own rainforest mind.”

So, my darling bloggEEs, time to “fully explore what is waiting for you.” Go here and get yourself some love, and some hugs and kisses. You will be glad you did. And I will be enormously grateful.

I absolutely love this book! I’m not one to read a book front to back…I’m a scanner, so for my particular reading/learning style, most books have far more words than necessary. Your “on the money” chapter titles and subtitles make it very easy for me to zero in on whatever may interest me at any given moment….and your descriptions, explanations and insights reflect a deep understanding of what it really means to be gifted. Quite honestly, one of my favourite books ever. You can be sure that I’ll be referencing this book in our gifted adult group sessions. Thanks and congratulations Paula! <3

Thank you, Gord. That means a lot coming from someone who works in this field along with being gifted yourself! I appreciate your sharing it with your clients.

What I am curious about and look forward to learning more about the subject, a gifted person can learn all they want about themselves but how does a person introduce themselves to the world and friends and future individuals personal or business? Thanks.

The more you know about yourself and the more you accept and understand rainforest-mindedness, the better you’ll be able to navigate relationships. To, for example, accommodate your sensitivities or communicate more effectively or pick more appropriate people and career paths. And, yes, it’s complicated both personally and professionally. I’ve written a lot of posts about how to find other RFMs. Keep reading! I think some of your questions will be addressed!

Paula, thanks for replying. Is it recommended or best to just outright tell a new person (It would be tactically and respectful when I would do it and at the right time), hey I am gifted and weird, here is a list of stuff that is normal to me and you (new person) are allowed to ask questions or just decide if you want me as a friend. I am 42 years old and am mentally exhausted and just want the anxiety of excessive thinking of having a new friend to be over quickly. I sent a request for service request this morning, so plan on seeking more specific help. In the recent past, I was visiting with a very nice woman and did describe just my quirkiness but I told her I thought it was an autism spectrum disorder. She was open to learning and did visit with me and I think we made a connection but both having jobs we didn’t or couldn’t leave. My job (self employment) changed and I was thinking of seeing of reconnecting and explaining that if we might date, I would be open to moving, getting a job and renting an apartment (excessive thinking and planning – just let her know I don’t want to move to fast). She lives close, I know a family member and we did meet, so not a dangerous relationship. Thanks

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking but here are some thoughts: I think it depends on the situation how quickly you go into detail about your giftedness. But I see you say you’d be tactful and respectful. So, trust your intuition in the moment. The thing is, even if you mention giftedness, it will likely still feel awkward for a while getting to know someone new. A fun way might be to show the person the quiz in my book. That could be a light-hearted way to talk about it. They could also answer the quiz questions. Sometimes people are uncomfortable with the word “gifted” so using RFM and then explaining it could be a place to start.

Found this blog while looking (at night) for information about being a gifted adult. I’ve started only recently to consider the possibility that I’m gifted and stumbling upon your content was truly a blessing. Thank you for everything you do.

Can’t wait! Are you accepting new patients?? I’ve been following you since our days in Fargo, ND and we FINALLY just moved back home to Eugene. Our oldest is gifted and has the overwhelming anxiety and hypersensitivities that come with it.
